But the salacious case came to an unexpected end in Toronto yesterday when prosecutors revealed they were staying all charges against Petraitis, 69, and his girlfriend, year-old Sandra Rinella.

The decision is linked to the death of a key witness whose wife was allegedly having an affair with a police officer who was investigating the death. Petraitis's lawyer Edward Greenspan told the National Post he suspected the 'puzzling' twist was covering up a 'huge scandal. The Ontario Provincial Police concluded foul play was not suspected.

But concern over that probe grew when it was learned that the investigating officer, Detective Constable Claude Chartrand, had become romantically involved with Mr. The defence lawyers were told more information was forthcoming, but then they learned the case was stayed. Chartrand faces an internal charge of discreditable conduct.

Brendan Crawley, spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-General, added there was little he could say about the case because of the stay.
